Nikolaevsky railway station

A parcel of land which Oktiabrskaya currently occupies went down into St. Petersburg history as early as the middle of the 18th century when the tsar’s menagerie Elephant’s Yard was located at that court. Constriction works of the railway between Moscow and St. Petersburg and building of Nikolaevsky Railway Station started development of a big square in front of railway station. It’s design was approved in February 1845, by Emperor Nicholas I himself. He ordered good looking facilities to be built by the side opposite St Petersburg – Moscow Railway Station of this capital.

A building of Oktiabrskaya hotel was designed by architect A.P.Guemilian.

Newspapers of that time described the construction works in details telling that this building is large, they said, it would consist of 100-150 various facilities for guests. Looking the rooms, unfinished yet, one could confidently state that the hotel would be magnificent.

The hotel was excessively equipped by technical innovations of the time: the rooms were heated by "pneumonic stoves", fans were installed there to purify the air, passages were equipped with "talking tubes". The hotel was called Znamenskaya and opened in December, 1851 a year and half later, when regular communication by virtue the first Russian railway was established.

In the second half of the 19th century the hotel was reconstructed several times, it changed its owners and names. After Znamenskaya it became Severnaya, then it was renamed into Big Severnaya.

At the beginning of the 20th century it acquired particular respectability. The building was decorated with a dome inside of which there was a restaurant. An elevator with electrical motor was added to the building’s facade. The hotel held its own omnibus which was carried by horses, it was available for the guests. The rooms at the hotel numbered more than two hundred. A number of bathrooms were 23. Many rooms were equipped with the city telephones. The restaurant, one of the largest in the city, accommodated up to 500 people. The hotel rooms were furnished with elegant furniture and carpets.

After the revolution the building was given to the October Railway Administration. Only in 1930 the hotel was opened again, beared its nowaday's name.
